After Digging Up a Hole That Appeared in his Driveway, Man Discovers Decades-Old Secrets
When people move to a new house, they are starting a new adventure. Sometimes, these adventures take unexpected turns and could lead to unexpected discoveries. This happened to Simon Marks of Britain. After this vehicle got stuck in his driveway, he unearthed discoveries that had long since been forgotten.
Simon Marks was just like any other person going about his daily routine. He liked to hang out with his friends during the weekend. He worked a typical office job. He thought this day was going to be like any other. Life had different ideas.
When he tried to reverse his car out of the driveway, he felt a bump. No matter what he tried to do, the car wouldn’t budge. He quickly realized that something was wrong with the pavement.
On further investigation, the stones in his driveway appeared to be a little bit off. Simon wasn’t sure why, but he wanted to figure out what was going on. Was there a larger discovery that lay underneath?
After digging deeper, he found that an enormous hole was just underneath his driveway. As he had just purchased a new piece of property, he was understandably concerned. What was going to happen to his driveway? Would this threaten his home? He decided that he needed to ask for help. The more eyes, the better.
Simon called his father to help but he was just as terrified. As they kept exploring this enormous sinkhole that had just appeared underneath his home, he realized that his home might also be swallowed up. Perhaps the entire neighborhood would go with it. Would his worst fears be realized? Or could something good come out of this scary situation?
As the team kept digging, they continued to make more and more discoveries. After a while, they realized that the rut that they had discovered might not have occurred naturally. It looked more like it was man-made. If it was man-made, then what was its purpose? Who would want to dig such an enormous hole? Was it meant to remain hidden forever?
As they kept digging, they realized that the man-made hole was not meant to be a sinkhole. It was meant for an entirely different purpose. Fortunately, this meant that Simon’s home would be safe. Of course, the question still remained regarding why the hole was there in the first place. After a while, the team realized that there was an important historical reason regarding the hole’s existence.
Of course, to find the historical clues, the team had to keep digging. The pair later found that there was a ladder that was left in the hole. The ladder was rusted over and appeared very old. Because of the age of the ladder, the team realized that they had just stumbled on history. What was at the bottom of the ladder?
With only one way to find out what was buried at the bottom of the hole, the paid made the hole a little bit larger. Then, they bravely ventured down the ladder and into the hole. As the team kept digging and exploring, they found that there was more than just a single room underneath the ladder. What other treasures lay in wait?
What the team had stumbled upon was actually a bomb shelter. When the pair purchased the land, the older home actually was in a different location. Simon’s home had covered up a bomb shelter that had been built in 1938. Just prior to this, a bomb had landed nearby. This shelter was created to protect the citizens of the local area during times of war. The shelter was made to defend against attacking Germans.
As the team kept exploring the shelter, they started to stumble upon important historical artifacts. They found an old newspaper that had been published during World War II. One of the clippings that they found discussed the local airport. The clipping discussed the possible destruction of the local airport if the Germans kept dropping bombs in the area. Clearly, life was much different for the previous owners of the property.
In addition, Simon also found that the shelter was fully stocked to keep the residents alive. They found food and water that might have been used to sustain people who were sheltered in the rooms. There was enough in there to keep people alive for days in the event of an attack.
As the team kept digging, they were blown away at how deep the shelter was. They had been digging for a long time and found that they were actually five feet underground. Even though the shelter and its artifacts had been covered by mud over the years, it had withstood the test of time.
Simon also found a room at the bottom of the shelter that had been bricked off. The team was unsure as to whether or not the brick wall was in place to conceal something behind it. The other option was that the brick wall was there to support the foundation of his home. As a result, he decided to keep the wall in place. The safety of his new house was more important.
As the quest continued, the story started to gain notoriety. Local papers started to visit Simon’s home to figure out what he had discovered. In an interview, Simon mentioned that his goal was to pay homage to his country’s past. It was not to become famous. He felt that he had an obligation to share his country’s past with others.
Simon also mentioned that his goal with the discovery of the shelter was to educate those who come after him. It is important for young students to take advantage of this opportunity. They can use it to learn more about their country’s past. In doing so, they also learn more about their own identity. Teachable moments such as this are invaluable.
Simon is not the first person to have stumbled upon an air raid shelter. Another couple in a nearby town found a similar shelter, called an Anderson shelter, while gardening. After feeling a metal ping while gardening, they quickly worked to figure out what they had found. It was another air raid shelter. Clearly, there were others who had the same idea during the war.
It turns out that many of these shelters had survived the war. They were built to withstand the blasts from bombs. Some of these shelters had to do just that to protect those that were inside. As people find these shelters, it is good that they have made an effort to preserve them. These shelters are an important part of history and it is important to share their stories. This history needs to be honored appropriately because, if history is forgotten, it might be repeated.
