Preschool Sweethearts Re-Unite 20 Years Later, Tie The Knot.
Everyone can remember their childhood sweetheart. Some of us end up staying with the first significant other we ever have, but most people move on as they grow in order to explore new relationships. For Matt Grodsky and Laura Sheel, they managed to do both. Sheel and Grodsky were only three years old when they formed a tight friendship. Little Matt Grodsky even declared his love in front of their preschool class. But kids grow up and life changes. Yet, Grodsky and Sheel never forgot one another and their incredible journey to reunite is definitely romantic enough to learn about.
Matt Grodsky and Laura Scheel started their relationship almost 25 years ago. The two met in preschool at three years old. Matt first saw Laura during recess and he was quick to take a shine to her, following her around trying to play games. This was just the beginning of a long-lasting and ultimately beautiful relationship.
It took a moment for Laura to ‘get’ Matt but soon they were first friends. Laura admitted that, at first, she thought he was kind of a goofball. Eventually, Laura concedes, his warm heart and hilarious sense of humor would win her over.
While Laura and Matt loved playing in their Phoenix-based preschool, they also got to hang out after school ended! Laura and Matt’s parents embraced the friendship, setting the stage for the growth of their beautiful relationship. It was quickly clear that the cute kids were inseparable.
At just three years old, Matt and Laura were way ahead of the costume game. Matt, being the goofball that he was, would follow Laura around while reciting his favorite lines from ‘The Lion King’. We’re sure that the costume was just a coincidence.
A great friendship is built on what you share with one another. Matt spent plenty of his time sharing his ostentatious sense of humor. Laura paid him back in kind by teaching him the important things in life: swinging on swings, the best way to eat string cheese and even how to roll down hills for maximum dizziness.
Neither family could even begin to plan an activity without making sure that Matt and Laura would get to hang out with one another. Pretty soon it was clear that they had more than just a normal friendship. They were the best of friends.
Graduating preschool was a big moment for Matt and Laura but it was also a sad one. As they moved on to kindergarten, their families were sending them to different schools. So not only did Matt and Laura not have class together, they didn’t even go to the same school. The decision was made based on where they lived, which was unfortunate.
Still, both families tried to make it work by scheduling the occasional playdate. Despite the effort put into the relationship with both families, the children continued to grow apart.
Weeks turned to months which in turn changed to years. Before they knew it, Matt and Laura were only communicating via letters in the mail. Obviously, they found one another again, but how?
Nearly 10 years after Laura first met Matt, she would begin her freshman year of high school. Unbelievably, one of Laura’s first new friends in high school would know Matt. How wild is that? Suddenly, the world felt a whole lot smaller and Laura had to make a decision. Should she reach out to Matt after years apart?
While Matt & Laura were enrolled in different schools, that didn’t stop them from connecting again. Laura hesitantly sent out a text to Matt, the number supplied by their mutual friend. Then she waited, but not long. Matt replied moments later and soon the two friends were back together again. This time with their own cars and ability to communicate! They met up for a simple dinner and a movie and before long, they were together for real.
Every good story has twists and turns. In the story of Matt & Laura, the big second-act twist was college. Once again, school would tear the two lovebirds apart. After a serious discussion, they decided that they’d try to make it work via a long distance relationship. Who knew what the future had in store?
With Matt in Chicago, attending Columbia College, and Laura attending Northern Arizona University, there were more than 1,600 miles separating them. Matt knew that the distance wouldn’t be forever, so he got an idea. While they worked to cultivate their relationship, he would begin planning the ultimate engagement.
By their junior year of college, Matt knew that Laura was the one. During summer, Matt executed the idea that he had been incubating for so long. Matt and Laura went out for a picnic but soon it became increasingly clear that this was no ordinary picnic. It would be a picnic at their old preschool!
Matt had actually planned for this picnic way back when they were still kids, attending that very preschool. Matt was nervous and anxious, but he knew that she was the one.
Of course, it was worth the wait. Laura gave an enthusiastic yes and before long the two were planning their wedding. From preschool to walking down the aisle, separated for almost ten years, this was a tale pulled straight from a Disney movie.
Matt and Laura chose ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’ for their first dance, a song by Elton John. The wedding was officiated by Matt’s uncle and everyone at the party was floored by the beautiful unlikeliness of this moment.
Matt’s uncle opined that most preschoolers spend their time searching for snacks. Instead, Matt & Laura found their soulmate.
Matt & Laura have now been together for almost five years and their story is only just now getting picked up. When the Instagram account ‘The Way We Met’ shared their story, nearly 30,000 people would ‘like’ it. Soon, newscasters were calling. In what can be a tough world, it’s awfully nice to read about one of the more beautiful moments.
